Thanks for a great conversation during the first week of semester. It was great to have you ask so many questions, many of which we will hopefully answer as the semester continues.
I have added a PDF of Week 1's PowerPoint slides to Week 1 under "Modules". We really only covered the first few, and then only fleetingly. I may come back to some of the information in these slides next week, but feel free to look through them and ask any questions.
Coming up in Week 2 (some of which will also be part of your readings and journal responses):
- Timeline of Oral History
- Reliability of Memory
- Oral history and oral traditions
- Individual versus collective memory
Homework:
- Readings (as per unit outline: the relevant pages from the text book, Doing Oral History; Curthoys & McGrath, pp. 91-92; Thomson, 2007). The other reading by Thomson is supplementary i.e. optional.
- Journal Entry #1 (draft responses to the questions for journal entry #1. We will then discuss your responses and understanding in class. You will then have the last half an hour of class to revise your draft response.)
- Post your tutorial questions in the relevant Discussion Forum (go to "Discussions" tab in Canvas and then post in "Journal Entry #1 Tutorial questions. You may wish to add a few sentences providing some context for your questions to introduce or explain the questions. Please post these questions into the discussion forum the night before class.
Remember that I do check my emails each day, so feel free to email if you have any questions or are struggling with any part of the set tasks.
I look forward to more lively conversation and discovery on Friday!
Melinda
